Counterfeits!9/14/2017 Counterfeits in the military? What are they referring to? How can a phrase so simple be so deadly?
Before tonight I never even knew that the phrase existed. The counterfeits I am referring to in the phrase are counterfeit electric parts that have been poisoning our electronics industry at an increasing rate over the last five years. It makes you wonder what started this? More so, with so many countermeasures, operational tests, and standards of operations how do counterfeit parts still affect the military? It can be perceived that the military pond the issue of combating the exposure of counterfeits to the supplier vice aiding the solution. The DOD came up with vague electronic counterfeit phrases and basically said “fix the problem” that I won’t clearly defined to ensure I don’t hurt my chances of buying low by excluding competitors. The problem to me is that counterfeit electronics in the electronics industry are a direct reflection of the industries demand for the best price. Trying to save a buck or two has been known not only to cause minor or catastrophic system degradations, but also cause the loss of life. Is saving money worth the risk? Could individuals who aid the creation of these “suspect counterfeit parts” be considered terrorist for selling the parts to the military, knowing the parts are defective? Is the DoD doing everything in their power to protect their most valued assets, “the Sailor”. As a maintenance technician, this angers me, all of the trouble shooting and associated risk that could have been mitigated, have no expiration date. I know I asked a lot of questions, that are spun from my emotional connection to the issue. But the most important question is what can we do with knowledge that counterfeits are real? The military always taught me not only identify the problem but find a solution.
